books & House histories

A house history book in a library open

Local library and record offices will have a collection of local history books. These can be very helpful in providing background for your research and sometimes you may be lucky to find your home is actually mentioned or featured.

Many parishes have excellent public histories and most counties have a Record or Archaeological Society which produces regular pamphlets and books about the area. Some parishes now have online history sections, so it is worth googling the name of your area.

Listed below are some of the publishers of local history books
Philimores
Grimsay Press in Scotland
LocalHistories.org is a useful portal for local history
Vision of Britain is produced by the Great Britain Historical Geography Information System and provides lots of local information

Victoria County Histories is a must go to site for Local History too. Produced on line by the University of London, search for the county in which your house/village/ town is situated.

A great local history site (it’s more than that) is Victorian London compiled by Lee Jackson
