Enclosures
The enclosure of common lands has been going on since the Medieval period but the 1801 Enclosure Act set down a legal process.
The maps and records were used which set out who was allotted a piece of land with a description of the boundaries.
Finding the appropriate map and awards can be testing. They are widely scattered both in The National Archives and Local record Offices.
Enclosure Awards are legal documents, so they are most likely found in the records of various courts. To find out more follow this link to the National Archives.
There is also an online database of The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales accessible from the History Data Service page of the University of Essex website
